Get to know Julie Abayomi
Julie Abayomi is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with British Dietetic Association. She works in academics setting, an associate professor at Edge Hill University in United Kingdom. One of her nice publication is "Micro-nutrients and the use of vitamin and mineral supplements during pregnancy and lactation".
Could you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Julie Abayomi, I am a dietitian working in academia currently at Edgehill University. I am married to a Nigerian and we have two children.
How did you become a dietitian?
After high school I studied BSc nutrition and dietetics for 4 years at university of Wales institute, Cardiff.
Different pictures comes to peoples mind when they hear the word "dietitian" , as a professional who is a dietitian?
A dietitian is a health professional with expert knowledge of nutrition; they take a holistic, patient-centred view of nutrition and health, encouraging behaviour change to follow appropriate diet.
What does a typical day look like for you in your current role?
I have just started a new job, so currently I have lots of meetings with my staff to get to know them better, plus I have a lot of training courses to attend so that I am familiar with the procedures at my new university. When I get time, I am also writing up a research paper.
What do you like most about being a dietitian?
I like the variety, there are so many different jobs we can do in our profession and no two patients are the same, so it is always interesting.

How can dietitians communicate nutrition at grass root level?
There are a lot more dietitians now involved in sharing nutrition messages via media and social media. It is important that we represent evidenced based practice as there are so many fake nutritionist spreading false information.
What would I find in your kitchen?
My husband and I both enjoy cooking, so we have a big kitchen- the right size to accommodate family and friends. We have plenty of fruit and vegetables stored to ensure that we have an enjoyable but healthy diet every day.
Any advice for Nutrition and Dietetics student?
Work hard, keep up to date, interact with people and read around your subject - this helps to maintain an interest in people and the wider world- important skills for a dietitian.
